Bad Judgement By Kyle Busch

By Sam Atwell

Many times on the radio show and on the website I have extolled the driving talents of Kyle Busch. What this young man has accomplished in his short career is nothing short of amazing.

Coming off an impressive win at his hometown track on Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Kyle Busch and his team, possibly held over due to weather in Charlotte, went out on the town to celebrate the win.

Kyle Busch went to Body English in the Hard Rock Café in Las Vegas. According to celebrity news website, TMZ.com, Kyle Busch shelled out $5,000 on champagne for his guests at the celebration. No problem, the guy deserves to celebrate; he has three wins this season. The problem, for me, comes from the photographs that were published on the website. Two of them show Kyle spraying champagne on the crowd from some sort of riser and the other photo shows Kyle high-fiving someone with an open bottle of champagne in the other hand.

For me, this is where the bad judgment comes into play. Once again, he deserves to celebrate, but, in my opinion, do it behind closed doors. Kyle Busch would seemingly have enough money to party with several hundred of his closest friends. He is in his hometown; his people could have rented a private room for them to celebrate in without the glare of cameras. I’m not saying Kyle Busch did anything wrong, I’m just saying this doesn’t portray a good image. It is possibly an image that a sponsor might not like, it is possibly an image that an owner might not like and it might not be liked by hundreds of fans that have their children adorned with the driver’s apparel.

In a time when sponsors are hard to come by I would think that a driver would avoid even a hint of controversy, but I may be wrong and I may be too old and forgotten what it is like to be young,

Before you hammer me about picking on Kyle Busch remember he signed up for this deal, he knows he is under scrutiny by everyone, especially folks with cameras. I just hope someone can talk to him and let him know that this was probably a bad idea before he does serious damage to his image.

Sam , you are the one with bad judgement. In paragraph 4 you state ” I’m not saying Kyle Busch did anything wrong… ” . He didn’t do anything wrong - and it sill generates an article in a blog. What a waste. There are schools that teach journalism. Maybe you should take one of the courses. Unfortunately there are not schools that can fix “stupid ” or “poor judgement” so you’re on your own there.

How is this any different from a Victory Lane celebration?

  3. Don Says:

Lay off the guy, he deserves to have fun, at least he isn’t shooting up, or giving the sport a bad name.
You sound like a typical Kyle hater, having to accept he’s one of the best, and can’t say it without a but…
He does his job on the track, and better than the Most Popular Driver ever has, or ever will

by no means am I a Kyle Busch fan, but out partying with his friends and having a good time is not against the law. it just amazes me at how politically correct we think we have to be in today’s world, people celebrate things, I would think there would be far more interesting things to write about than KB partying with his friends

    Sam,

I looked at the pics and read the blog. And….sorry, but I disagree with you on this one. I don’t see anything wrong here at all. I think you just got champagne in your eyes and that made you mad! LOL

He said it’s the biggest win of his life! I say let him celebrate. It’s just champagne…it’s not drugs or even hard liquor. He’s not falling down drunk…he’s just having a good time. I agree with upstate who say’s this is no different than Victory Lane…you wanna stop VL celebrations?

Wonder if you would have called “Jr.” partying with his friend at his nite club bad judgement?

    I think not.

    Give the kid a break.

  7. Richard Racehorse Says:

Sam, Sam. Lighten up. Like a good little Lord Fauntleroy, you are nitpickin the smithereens out of something that doesn’t deserve a mention.

    You sound like a saint.

    Jeez!

  8. Nelda Quier Says:

Kyle doesn’t have a “good immage” to begin with, so I guess it really doesn’t matter. Except I wonder how Joe Gibbs, who is against all things “alcohol,” feels about it. He’s the only one that matters.

  9. DJones Says:

I saw the pictures on the TMZ site. All I could think of was Michael Phelps. That guy was partying and look what happened to him.

KyB doesn’t need to party in a bubble, but he should be careful. Fortunatley, we rarely see/hear bad things about NASCAR drivers.

@ Nelda, good point about Gibbs.

  10. Sam Says:

I guess I failed my mission as a writer, because most of you missed my main point.

I know he did nothing wrong, illegal or even unethical and he deserved to celebrate his win. My point was it is not a good image to have out in public. Precisely because of the politically correct world we live in, this could be detrimental to his career. Let’s take this to an extreme. Suppose someone in the photos consumed too much of Kyle’s champagne, left the club, involved in a wreck, injuries, lawyer, lawyer sees picture, Kyle Busch being sued. Whether you like it or not sports figures have a target on them when they are in public. Remember the other Busch had a problem with public perception that cost him a job and another run at a championship.

As for Junior, if pictures like this appeared of Junior it might explain some of his mental errors on the racetrack!

  11. Chris Says:

Some of your points are valid. Here’s the issue. We are in a day and age of camera phones. Everyone in the world thinks they can have the next big scoop. If he does the same thing in a room with 200 of his “buddies” the same thing happens. Guess what? He’s 23 years old. There are a ton of 23 year old actors, actresses, and athletes doing the same thing every night. He won a race in his hometown, so people are covering this. If he did the same thing two months ago, noone would hear anything about it.

  12. marc Says:

Sam - “Precisely because of the politically correct world we live in, this could be detrimental to his career.”

So you’re saying we should all bow down to political correctness?

Sorry, that not only doesn’t fly it never reaches “V2″ and rotates off the ground.

As for your hypothetical, better check the laws on the books, KB wouldn’t be the one libel, the night club as the seller of the beverage in question would be.
