Rainy Sunday’s Make Me Mad

Kurt Busch’s win Sunday at New Hampshire made me mad. Not because I hate Kurt Busch or anything. But I do hate seeing somebody win that really had no business doing so. And what aggravates me more is when that driver, in his post race interview, acts like he somehow DID deserve to win because of his team’s brilliant strategy.

I realize that winning is the only thing that matters and you do anything and everything to put your car in Victory Lane. For doing that, Busch and crew chief Pat Tryson deserve credit. But man, talk about stealing one.

Busch was running 18th, 18th!! About where he’d run most of the day. Then the 17 cars in front of him all had to hit pit road for fuel with 29 laps to go. Tryson knew he didn’t have a car capable of competing on this day and the only chance for a good finish was roll the fuel strategy dice.

Tryson had already made up his mind that he would leave the 2 car on the track no matter what and stretch their fuel to the end. But things worked out even better when rain halted the event after just a few more laps of green flag racing. Busch didn’t have to worry about holding off the many cars that had been faster than him all day.

So Busch lucks into a win. I hate to see that. Lots of guys have won on fuel mileage and luck. But rarely has a car that was so deep in the field all day been able to pull it off. And Tony Stewart deserved to win that race. He clearly had the best car and has had so much bad luck. But things like that happen in racing. I do wish that Busch would have acted…..I don’t know, a little guiltier in his post-race comments. I would have loved to have seen him admit that his car was junk and they stole a win they didn’t otherwise deserve.

It is sometimes better to be lucky than good, (which Busch DID say) but thankfully it is rare to see a car that far from good get that lucky.

Stewart Gets A Pass

Being a host of a radio show that talks about NASCAR I have had many opportunities to talk about Tony Stewart. A lot of the time, I have been critical of Tony and how he deals with the media. Over the last couple of days, I have heard and read many comments about what a “jerk” Tony was on Sunday to the TNT reporter. To be fair, I have really enjoyed and looked forward to TNT’s coverage of NASCAR, but on Sunday, what they did to Tony just was not fair. Pit reporter Marty Snider went to seek out Stewart to stir up controversy. Stewart finished 10th in the race, not a normal position that is interviewed. The producers at TNT told the reporter to go to Stewart and ask about being spun out, they wanted Stewart to say something controversial but he refused. He said that he did not know what happened; he had not seen the replay. That was not enough for the reporter. He brought up the incident at Bristol where Harvick and Stewart got together and that incident possibly cost Harvick a win. Everyone that saw the incident on Sunday could see it was not intentional, it was a racin’ deal. Harvick entered the turn too hot and wheel-hopped the car and spun out McMurray and Stewart. I don’t know if they sought out McMurray or Harvick, but it wasn’t on TV. TNT wanted to create “drama” where there was none. Tony was set-up by the media this time. My day job is working in the news department of a television station and I have to tell you that, at times, the news (sports) media attempt to make something big out of something that was a minor deal, just watch your evening news. You will see stories lead the evening news that really do not amount to much except flashing lights and crime scene tape. If you noticed, the gaggle of reporters around Stewart on Sunday, all that was missing were flashing lights and crime scene tape. You wonder why Stewart has such a stormy relationship with the media. Last Sunday was an example, this time Tony gets a pass and I hope that TNT learned a lesson about creating drama!

Great Video

I saw this video today and thought it was cool.   I know it is a huge crash, but the drivers, cars and commentary take me way back in NASCAR.  Enjoy the video - Sam
